Making it Real PDF

Published on 2006 by Radcliffe Publishing

This work includes a Foreword by Jonathan Silverman, Associate Clinical Dean and Director of Communication Studies, School of Clinical Medicine, University of Cambridge. Emphasis is placed on shared decision making, appraisal, and dealing with difficult situations as well as the more common topics such as taking a history and breaking bad news. Healthcare educators with an interest in communication skills training and personal and professional development will find this guide invaluable, as will undergraduate and postgraduate teachers in university and workplace settings. |As its central component, this manual of experiential learning provides a bank of ready-made simulated patient scenarios that will prove invaluable to anybody setting up a programme from scratch - here is a collection of scenarios with information for facilitators, participants and simulated patients and hints on how to run sessions on specific topics and it is clearly not just for beginners - those already running established programs will also find it so useful to be able to turn to a resource of simulated patient scenarios when planning a new session.| |Now educators can turn to a practical source of expert guidance in setting up sessions utilising simulated patients. Experiential work with simulated patients is the most effective way of improving learners' communication skills. Practical, thoughtful and well considered help such as this new book is worth its weight in gold and will help so many educators as they strive to introduce this approach to learning into medical curricula and assessments.| - Jonathan Silverman, in the Foreword.

Graduate Medical Education That Meets the Nation's Health Needs PDF
By:Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education
Published on 2014-09-30 by National Academy Press

Today's physician education system produces trained doctors with strong scientific underpinnings in biological and physical sciences as well as supervised practical experience in delivering care. Significant financial public support underlies the graduate-level training of the nation's physicians. Two federal programs--Medicare and Medicaid--distribute billions each year to support teaching hospitals and other training sites that provide graduate medical education. Graduate Medical Education That Meets the Nation's Health Needs is an independent review of the goals, governance, and financing of the graduate medical education system. This report focuses on the extent to which the current system supports or creates barriers to producing a physician workforce ready to provide high-quality, patient-centered, and affordable health care and identifies opportunities to maximize the leverage of federal funding toward these goals. Graduate Medical Education examines the residency pipeline, geographic distribution of generalist and specialist clinicians, types of training sites, and roles of teaching and academic health centers. The recommendations of Graduate Medical Education will contribute to the production of a better prepared physician workforce, innovative graduate medical education programs, transparency and accountability in programs, and stronger planning and oversight of the use of public funds to support training. Teaching hospitals, funders, policy makers, institutions, and health care organizations will use this report as a resource to assess and improve the graduate medical education system in the United States.

This is an exploration of how the higher functions of the brain can be investigated, evaluated and, possibly, explained. A central theme throughout the book is rationality, since issues requiring rational evaluation confront many people everyday though emotional factors are often more influential in determining action. The book looks at various questions: is it possible to understand what is going on in someone else's mind?; why do people who are known very well often react irrationally, in a totally different way to what is expected?; what are emotions, beliefs, feelings and desire? Throughout, episodes from history involving famous artists and politicians are used - Gladstone and Lincoln, Bach and Graupner, Austen and Dickens - all providing useful examples to illustrate how rationality can provide an insight into the feeling self.
